Today, Friday October 2, the CUPRA Rotterdam Premier Padel P2 (Rotterdam Ahoy, September 28 – October 4, €264,534 in prize money and 500 FIP points for the champions) plays its quarterfinals: eight matches —four men's and four women's— from 10:30 Spanish time (the same in the Netherlands; 05:30 in Argentina), with Red Bull TV starting its broadcast of the tournament precisely in this round. Thursday's round of 16 served one big upset — the rest of the favourites delivered. This is the last-eight picture in the Ahoy.
The round of 16 left a single outsider: Libaak-Alfonso
The story of Thursday has two names: Tino Libaak and Gonza Alfonso knocked out the seventh seeds, Fran Guerrero and Javi Leal, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, after more than two hours of play. The Argentine pair, who had already won their main-draw debut on Tuesday against Rodríguez Martínez-Abbate, are now the only pair outside the top eight seeds left in the quarterfinals —and their reward is a frightening one: the world No. 1s and defending champions, Tapia-Coello, who began their title defence by beating Montiel-Santigosa 6-3, 6-2. The stakes don't end there: for Libaak and Alfonso, every win also strengthens their case for Argentina's squad at the World Cup in Doha (November 2-7).
The remaining favourites delivered with authority in their debuts (all of them arrived with a first-round bye):
- Di Nenno-Paquito Navarro (4) beat Zapata-Naranjo 6-0, 6-3 in under an hour: the new fourth-seeded pair gave nothing away.
- Galán-Chingotto (2) wasted no time either against Jensen-Gala: 6-0, 6-2.
- Augsburger-Lebrón (3) edged Arce-Tello 6-1, 7-6(7).
- Stupaczuk-Sanz (5) sent Hernández-Castaño packing with a double 6-2 — their second in a row after their main-draw debut.
- Yanguas-Nieto (6) beat Lijó-Gil 7-6(3), 6-4.
- Momo-Campagnolo (8) defeated Diestro-Sintes 6-4, 7-5.
Women's draw: withdrawals and one surprise
In the women's draw the seeds came through comfortably, but the day was not without drama:
- Triay-Brea (1), the defending champions, opened their tournament by beating Talaván-Castelló 6-1, 6-3.
- Josemaría-González (2) defeated Collombon-Sharifova 6-4, 6-2.
- Fernández-Calvo (4) needed just three games: Goenaga retired with hip trouble at 0-3.
- Sánchez-Ustero (3) advanced without playing: Sainz-Saiz withdrew at the last minute due to Lucía Sainz's physical issues.
- Salazar-Osoro needed three sets to get past Barrera-Montes (7-5, 5-7, 6-1).
- Ortega-Araújo ousted Godallier-Valenzuela 6-3, 7-5.
- The surprise of the day came from Riera-Bidahorria: they eliminated the sixth seeds, Guinart-Alonso, 6-3, 6(3)-7, 6-3, extending the run they arrived in the Netherlands with, after two consecutive CUPRA FIP Tour titles.
- Jensen-Escacena completed the list by beating Rufo-Iglesias (6-4, 7-5), handing Claudia Escacena her first Premier Padel quarterfinal.
