Rotterdam P2: the double race for world No. 1 resumes in the Netherlands — the aspirants' rackets

The tour is back in action: the CUPRA Rotterdam Premier Padel P2 runs from September 28 to October 4 in the Netherlands, with qualifying underway these days and the main draw starting this week — the quarter-finals, on Friday October 2, are already scheduled on Red Bull TV, which broadcasts from that round. And the field is the full one: the tournament's official player list places Agustín Tapia and Arturo Coello as the top seeds, followed by Alejandro Galán and Federico Chingotto (02), Leandro Augsburger and Juan Lebrón (03), and, on the women's side, Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea (01), Paula Josemaría and Bea González (02), Ariana Sánchez and Andrea Ustero (03) and Claudia Fernández and Martina Calvo (04).

With 17 tournaments completed and seven to go, both races for world No. 1 remain wide open — and the four pairs at the center of each race are all in Rotterdam. These are the aspirants' rackets, all of them in our catalog.

Leal-Guerrero arrive with the Lyon title under their arm

The fresh story of the week: Javi Leal and Fran Guerrero were crowned FIP Platinum Lyon champions yesterday, beating the tournament's top seeds, Franco Stupaczuk and Jon Sanz, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 (official results in the padelfip.com draws). In Rotterdam they will be the seventh seeds, after being the breakout pair of the season: at the Pretoria P1 they knocked out Lebrón-Augsburger in the quarter-finals and Coello-Tapia in the semi-finals (7-5, 7-5), ending a run of 27 consecutive finals for the world No. 1s. In the Lyon women's event, the surprise came from Fassio-Pérez, champions over Caldera-Goenaga.

The men's race: nine titles to seven

Tapia-Coello have won nine titles in 2026 (Riyadh, Cancún, the Italy Major, Valencia, Valladolid, Bordeaux, Málaga, London and the Paris Major); Galán-Chingotto have seven (Gijón, Miami, NewGiza, Asunción, Buenos Aires, Pretoria and the Madrid P1). They have met in 11 finals, with the No. 1s leading 7-4 and on a six-match winning streak since the Italy Major in Rome. In the FIP ranking the gap is 2,165 points (20,454 to 18,289); in the 2026 Race, which counts only this season's results, it is 1,270 — those are the 2025 points Coello-Tapia still have to drop before the Barcelona Finals, and the real target for Galán-Chingotto. One stat says it all: Chingalán are 64-10 this year, more match wins than any other pair on tour, but they lost them in the weeks with the biggest points on offer. Like in Paris, where they served for the title at 5-3 in the deciding set and then lost four straight games and the tie-break 7-1: Tapia remains unbeaten at Roland Garros across the Major's four editions.

Juan Lebrón and Leo Augsburger are the only pair to have won a title outside the duopoly this year: the Brussels P2 in April, against Coello-Tapia themselves, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Since then they have piled up near-misses — the Cancún final (6-7, 6-3, 7-5), the Málaga final (6-2, 6-2) and the Paris semi-final (7-5, 6-3) — with a 40-16 record that keeps them fifth (8,040 points) and sixth (7,359) in the world, both already qualified for the Barcelona Finals. They have met in eight finals, 5-3 in favor of Josemaría-González, but the last two — Málaga (7-5, 3-6, 7-6) and Madrid (6-7, 6-3, 6-3) — went to the No. 1s, who arrive in Rotterdam with 16,974 points each against 14,017 and 13,889 for Bea and Paula. It is their third title of 2026 (after Riyadh, where they already beat Triay-Brea 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, and Valencia), and Sánchez is world No. 3 with 14,029 points.
