Round, teardrop or diamond: which paddle shape is for you
The shape decides where the sweet spot sits and how much it forgives your mishits. It's the first decision — and the one most people skip.

Before looking at the carbon, the core or whose name is on it, look at the shape. It's what determines where the sweet spot sits, how much power the paddle hands you and how much it punishes you when you miss the center.
The three shapes (and a fourth)
Round — sweet spot in the center
The balance sits low, close to your hand. That means the paddle handles itself: you bring it up fast, defend comfortably and off-center hits don't fly off you. In exchange, the smash doesn't come for free; you have to supply the power.
It's the default shape if you've been playing under two years, if you play a backhand-heavy game, or if paddles feel heavy to you late in a match.

Teardrop — the real middle ground
The sweet spot sits a little higher than on a round paddle and the balance is medium. You get ball exit without losing much control. It's the best-selling shape precisely because it doesn't force you to choose.

Diamond — everything up top

Hybrid — the catch-all label
