Rotterdam P2: Montiel-Santigosa pull off the first upset and knock out Goñi-Alonso

The main draw of the CUPRA Rotterdam Premier Padel P2 (Rotterdam Ahoy, September 28 – October 4, €264,534 in prize money and 500 FIP points for the champions) already has its first big story: Álvaro Montiel and Daniel Santigosa knocked out Edu Alonso and Aimar Goñi on their main-draw debut. The opening session of the round of 32, played on Tuesday evening, saw three of the four favourites deliver and the breakout pair of the summer head home early.

The upset of the day: Goñi-Alonso out on their debut

Montiel-Santigosa beat Goñi-Alonso 7-6(9), 6-3 on center court, taking a thriller of an opening set in the tie-break (9-7) before closing it out convincingly. It is the first unexpected result of the men's draw in Rotterdam and it hits a pair that arrived hoping to find form: Aimar Goñi, world No. 32, has just been called up by Spain for the FIP World Cup in Doha (November 2-7) and is enjoying his best individual season, but his partnership with Edu Alonso —quarterfinalists at the Paris Major after beating Yanguas-Nieto— has now stumbled twice in a row, following their round-of-16 exit at the FIP Platinum Lyon against Leygue-Guichard.

The rest of Tuesday: Tello, Libaak and Lijó deliver

The other three matches produced no surprises:

• Libaak-Alfonso beat Rodríguez Martínez-Abbate 6-3, 7-5.
• Arce-Tello edged Aguirre-García Rodrigo 7-6(3), 7-5, with Juan Tello debuting alongside Maxi Arce after playing the FIP Platinum Lyon with Di Nenno.
• Lijó-Gil sent Mouriño-Quílez packing 7-5, 6-3 on court 2.

The four winners now await their round-of-16 rivals, including the seeds who rested in this round.

Qualifying had its say too: Lamperti one step short again

The final qualifying round left two headlines. The good one: Ortega-Axelsson beat Insa-Miñano (6-3 7-6) and Zapata-Naranjo came from behind against Álvarez-Lamperti (5-7 6-2 6-2), completing with Moragues-Fonteny and Aragón-Roglán the qualified quota. The sad one: Miguel Lamperti, 47 years old and on his announced farewell tour, fell one match short of the main draw he was so close to on Tuesday morning.

Day 2 of the round of 32 starts at 12:00 (same time zone as Spain) and completes the men's first round with the pairs who rested on Tuesday:

• Court 3: Collombon-Sharifova vs Bellver-Domínguez, Moragues-Fonteny vs Zapata-Naranjo, Barrera-Montes vs López-Fassio and, at 18:30, Diestro-Sintes vs Aragón-Roglán.

The top four men's seeds —Tapia-Coello (01), Galán-Chingotto (02), Augsburger-Lebrón (03) and Di Nenno-Paquito Navarro (04)— skip this round and debut straight in the round of 16 on Thursday, October 1.

The women's draw joins in

Today also features the eight first-round women's matches, with the seeds waiting in the last 16: Triay-Brea, Josemaría-González, Sánchez-Ustero and Fernández-Calvo rest today and debut on Thursday. Fun fact of the day: the FIP Platinum Lyon champions, Fassio-Pérez, arrive in Rotterdam as separate pairs —Fassio partners Amanda López (vs Barrera-Montes) and Agueda Pérez partners Marta Caparrós (vs Godallier-Valenzuela)—.
