Paris Major 2026: Goñi and Alonso knock out the Madrid runners-up — quarter-finals day

If the seeds' debut had made one thing clear, the round of 16 of the Alpine Paris Major confirmed it: at Roland-Garros there is no comfortable match. Thursday delivered the statement win of the tournament —Edu Alonso and Aimar Goñi knocking out Coki Nieto and Mike Yanguas, the Madrid P1 finalists, 6-4, 6-3— and set up a Spanish-flavoured quarter-final Friday that also marks the debut of Red Bull TV as the Major's broadcaster.

Round of 16: Goñi-Alonso's upset and the illustrious casualties

The Spanish pair completed Thursday's big upset with a serious, no-nonsense performance, and they were not the only big-name victims. Jesús Moya and Thomas Leygue, the home hope, also fell to Franco Stupaczuk and Jon Sanz (7-5, 6-3), and Momo González and Lucas Campagnolo had to come from behind against José Jiménez and Álex Arroyo (3-6, 6-1, 6-3) to earn the right to face Lebrón.

In the women's draw the favourites took care of business: Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea (7-5, 6-3 over Rodríguez-Dal Pozzo), Paula Josemaría and Bea González (6-1, 6-0), Ari Sánchez and Andrea Ustero (6-1, 6-2) and Martina Calvo and Claudia Fernández (7-6(3), 6-1) are through to the quarter-finals. The day's notes came from Carolina Orsi and Patty Llaguno, into a quarter-final for the first time this season after an emphatic 6-1, 6-1, from Ale Salazar and Aranza Osoro, and from the emerging pair of Marina Guinart and Alejandra Alonso, who took out Sofía Saiz and Lucía Sainz 6-0, 6-2.
