The third round (round of 32) of the Rolex Shanghai Masters cost the tournament two of its big American hopes on Sunday: No. 3 Ben Shelton fell to Frenchman Arthur Gea (7-6(5), 7-6(3)) and Frances Tiafoe (7) went down to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in another classic (7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(6)). The event (7-18 October) rolls on with Zverev leading the race for world No. 1 and the round of 16 already on the horizon.

Arthur Gea, the debutant who took down the No. 4 seed

Aged 21 and making his Masters 1000 main-draw debut, the Frenchman, ranked 56th, claimed the biggest win of his career: his first victory over a Top 10 player, converting his first match point in the second-set tie-break. Gea, who lifted his maiden ATP title in Los Cabos, has now won 12 of his last 14 Tour-level matches since July.

Shelton, a US Open finalist four weeks ago, acknowledged his rival's superiority and the toll of the trip: «He outplayed me today, the guy played better than me», he told the press in Shanghai, «my body wasn't ready; I wasn't physically ready to play in Tokyo». The American also missed the chance to mathematically seal his place at the ATP Finals in Turin. The winner will face Jakub Mensik (13) in the round of 16 after the Czech beat Francisco Cerundolo 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

'Foki' ends Tiafoe's run in an epic

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (25) came from behind against Tiafoe, saving a match point in the decisive tie-break: 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(6), in the match the ATP highlighted as the epic of the day. The Spaniard books his best result in Shanghai and leaves the American half of the draw without its US Open semifinalist.

Zverev, 60 wins and chasing No. 1

The top seed, Alexander Zverev, needed three sets to subdue France's Quentin Halys (6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3), saving two match points against him in the second-set tie-break. The German fired 19 aces at 80% first serves in without facing a single break point, reaching his 60th win of the season —the third time he has passed that mark, after 60 in 2018 and 69 in 2024— extending his record campaign in the fight to finish the year as world No. 1, with Sinner already out of the race: the Italian has announced he is ending his season due to the right knee injury.

His round-of-16 opponent will be Alexander Bublik, who came from behind to beat Brandon Nakashima (16) 6-7(7), 6-3, 7-6(5).

The rest of Sunday's matches

  • Hubert Hurkacz beat local wild card Yi Zhou 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 and stays alive a week after knocking out Djokovic.
  • Alex de Minaur (9) eased past Rei Sakamoto 7-6(6), 6-4.
  • Karen Khachanov (26) gave Adrian Mannarino no chance: 6-2, 6-4.
